SUI MING CHU

Starting out as a concert pianist and teacher of musicin Hong Kong, Macau, mainland China and the United Kingdom, Chu first discovered Dalcroze Eurhythmics in the early 90s through Elsa Findlay’s book ‘Rhythm and Movement’.  Struck by how music could be taught through movement for musicality and personal expression, she soon became a Dalcroze devotee, taking time off from teaching to deepen her understanding through international courses in Japan, Europe, Australia and the US. She was fascinated by the holistic music teaching and learning approach of Dalcroze, which leads to knowing what music is about and creativity.

She was certified beginning in the UK in 2000 where she also set up her ‘Leading Note’ teaching studio. After completing a further two year degree course at the Institute Jaques-Dalcroze in 2009 in Geneva, she decided to return to Hong Kong to teach. She is the first qualified Hong Kong Chinese Dalcroze Eurhythmics teacher in Hong Kong. Her expertise in teaching has been built from her over 10 years teaching experience in different ages and backgrounds, including general public and professional dancers and actors in performing arts.

Sui Ming has been continuing collaboration with many tertiary education institutions in Hong Kong and China including HKAPA, Shanghai Orchestra academy, and HK Baptist university. She founded the HK Dalcroze Centre in 2010 to launch a series of preschool programs for children. She has been working in Shenzhen for three years before pandemic as music consultant to two schools to develop a music and movement curriculum in their local primary school.

In 2017 she received her Specialist Diploma in Choreological Studies with London’s Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, making her (as a specialist in movement as well as music) all the better placed to foster music and movement education.

Her research in music and movement has brought her to the stage of international conferences. In which she has been invited to present since 2015 each year till this summer 2023 in Switzerland, Greece, Poland and US. She is also well-regarded amount her international teaching colleagues and have been invited to give workshop in their virtual independent international forum VDM (Virtual Dalcroze Masterclass) during 2020 pandemic.
